August Bookshelf

So I had two books on my list for July…

Never Buried: Leigh Koslow Mystery Series, Book 1 is a very lighthearted, slightly bizarre/unrealistic but an okay murder/mystery read.  I’m not particularly inspired to read more from this author but nor would I avoid them unlike Painless.

Painless has to be one of the worst books I’ve ever read.  Eeeek.  I felt I was in the middle of a Jason Statham blow-em-up movie at times.  The characters were badly written, especially the part of the four-year old, who seemed to have a multiple personality disorder throughout the whole book.  Avoid at all costs (not that mine cost anything but you know what I mean)… or wait until Jason Statham stars in the film version!  If you read the reviews on Amazon most people agree with me but I’m left wondering whether the other reviewers actually read the same book?

I rattled through them very quickly and was thinking of what to read next.  A colleague began telling me about how great A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 1) was so I decided to give it a shot.

A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 1)

Now I rarely watch something and then go and read the book but I’m almost though the first book and it’s actually filled in a lot of the blanks I had when watching series one.  There seems to be a lot more background to the why’s and wherefores which I’m sure will become more apparent as the saga continues although I’m still unsure where people’s loyalty lies at times.  It’s well written and series one is pretty true to book one although the characters are all much younger in the book.  Tyrion Lannister is still my favourite character.  This book was so much easier to read than say Tolkien but certainly in a similar vein to LOTR epic.  I’ll have a little break before picking up book two but I’m looking forward to continuing on with the books (and TV series – eagerly awaiting season three).  These books are long be warned but at least you know you’re going to get your moneys worth out of them.

For August I have the following on my summer holiday reading list:

The Birds and Other Stories

The Birds And Other Stories (Virago Modern Classics)

Eye of The Needle

Eye of the Needle

Some sinister horror followed up with WW2 espionage.  Couldn’t get much father away from medieval fantasy than that could I?

In reserve I have this novella that my Mother In Law passed on to me:

The Reluctant Fundamentalist

Not entirely sure what genre this is to be honest!

Meal Planning

  • Chicken Goujons, Fries, Sweetcorn and Jack Daniels Sauce
  • Fish Pie (using left over mash and veg from Sunday’s pork roast)
  • Meatballs With Cous Cous Or Pasta
  • Prawn Curry

Strangely a wintery menu this week!

Nail Challenge Week 6: Violet

This week is violet – not sure where indigo went so I’ve decided to do a combination of the two so no colour feels left out.

My inspiration came from Nail Pron’s 80’s challenge which is a fabulous take on the traditional Louboutin manicure.

Violet (base) is a-england Lady Of The Lake and Indigo (bow and underside of the nail tip) is a-england Tristam.  I used some false nails for this challenge as my nails are quite short at the minute.  It did make it so much easier to polish the back of the nail tip as you can imagine.  The huge kawaii bow is from eBay… I wasn’t expecting something so massive to be honest.  They are white but take coloured polish well as you can see.  Another advantage of false nails – there’s no way I’d be able to live with the kawaii look as a regular manicure.

Oh, Go On Then If You’re Twisting My Arm

I’m about to run out of my Elemis Exotic Frangipani Shower Cream and up pops an email from Beauty Expert with a £4 loyalty voucher so off I ran to their online shop

I decided to go for a Korres shower gel this time and it was a toss up between their Japanese Rose and Vanilla Plum.  I’ve never tried anything from Korres bar their lip butter.

Japanese Rose Shower Gel 250mlVanilla Plum Shower Gel 250ml

Both RRP £7.50 for 250ml which seems reasonable.

The Vanilla Plum won out just because it sounded a little unusual and I’m also getting a free 50ml of Korres Magnolia Toning Mist with my order too (RRP £10).

So all in for £3.50 yipee.  No idea what to do with the mist but I’m sure there will be instructions on the back.

I also got a really good deal last week on REN samples/luxury samples.  That’s in addition to a free REN travel set that came with my Red Magazine subscription.  I have the following stash to try:

Six of the Best (RRP £20)

Mayblossom T-Zone Control Cleansing Gel (25ml)

Jojoba Microbead Purifying Facial Polish (25ml) – VERY SIMILAR TO ELEMIS GENTLE ROSE EXFOLIATOR

Omega 3 Overnight Repair Serum (10ml),

Glycolactic Radiance Renewal Mask (15ml)

Frankincense Revitalising Night Cream (15ml) – ONE OF MY FAVOURITE SMELLS

Active 7 Radiant Eye Gel (3ml)

F10 Smooth and Renew Peel Mask (5ml)

Invisible Pores Detox Mask (5ml)

Hydra-calm Cleansing Gel (5ml) – LOVE THIS ALREADY

Photoactive Sun Veil (5ml)

Red Travel Kit

Vetiver v7 Hand and Body Cream (15ml)

Hydra-Calm Global Protetion Day Cream (15ml) – ANOTHER FABULOUS SMELLING ONE

Active 7 Radiant Eye Gel (3ml)

It’s my first try of REN Skincare and I’ve got to say I’m impressed with what I’ve tried already and my skin hasn’t thrown a hissy fit with anything yet so that’s a bonus!

Have you tried anything new lately?

Making Octopus More… Octopussy

Two coats of George Octopus… with the addition of some China Glaze Wireless Holographic Top Coat on the top third of the nail and Saffron Silver Speckles on the nail tip.

Plus a generous coating of Seche Vite to smooth out the Silver Speckles.  Silver Speckles is another amazing ‘cheap’ polish.  I’m going to buy some other colours at some point.  Really big chunks of glitter mixed with some smaller hexagons.

Nail Challenge Week 5: Blue

Week 5: Blue

Two coats of Nails Inc The Serpentine sprinkled with some fine turquoise craft glitter.  I’m a big fan of Technic Mermaid but haven’t yet succumbed so I thought I’d see how close I could get with craft glitter.  I love the depth… so should I succumb to Mermaid or stick with the craft glitter?

I had a bit of trouble choosing which blue to choose for this one!  I could do this week over and over.
